How did we figure out what was the best slots?
To make this investigation fair, we used our advanced slot machine search to find all 4 or 5-star games by the different types of slots.
In this case, we divided it into the most popular slots: Video slots, Grid Slots, Classic Slots, and Megaways slots.
This classification made determining which type has the highest-rated slot reviews simpler. The higher the rate, the more playable and the better the type.
First, we broke down the different types of slots we reviewed. As a quick recap:
- Classic slots: 3 reel games with 1 to 10 paylines
- Video slots: 5 or 6 reel games with 9 paylines to multi ways to win
- Grid slots: games set on grids (5×5, 8×8, 10×10) where wins are made in clusters
- Megaways slots: 6 reel games with changing number of rows on each reel.
Obviously, some games don’t quite fit into any of these categories, but most will fall vaguely into one of these.
And yes, there were WAAAAYYY more video slots than there were any of the others combined. But when we looked at the number of 4 or 5 stars rated slots, a few things surprised us.

How not to fall into the trap of “popular slots”
It won’t surprise you that of all the slot types, the most popular (i.e. what is created by game studios the most) is video slots.
There are simply so many more video slots out there than any other type of game. It’s no wonder they won the popularity contest. But that’s not what we want to find here.
We wanted to find which of the different slot types had the most 4 or 5-star slot reviews in total.
We give a slot review 4 stars when it’s a must-play – i.e., a game that hits all the right notes for its type. So, is this a good ‘grid slot’ or a good ‘video slot’ compared to other games of its type? Four stars means that if you find it at a casino, you should probably take a spin if you like the type.
The much-coveted 5-star slot review is the one where we think everyone should take a spin. So if there’s a type of game that you wouldn’t usually play, play a 5-star game as it’s just a good game for as many as possible.
The most highly rated slots are… wait! What?!
Here are the final numbers once we put together over 2,000 slot reviews and broke them down by how many of them have 4 and 5-star slot reviews.
- 41% of Classic slots reviews had 4 or 5 stars
- 43% of Video slots reviews had 4 or 5 stars
- 82% of Grid slots reviews had 4 or 5 stars
- 48% of Megaways slot reviews had 4 or 5 stars
Grid slots take the win? How is that even possible? The maths don’t lie… or do they?
So, how did grid slots get so far ahead of the others?
Well, for one, there are just not as many grid games as the rest.
Consider that at the time of writing, we had 2129 slot reviews but only 34 grid slot reviews, and you can see why grid games may have an advantage.
There’s just less of them to mess up.
Then again, maybe the reviewers at LuckyMobileSlots.com just really, really, really, love all ways pay games or cluster pays slots?
Do Megaways slot games take the crown?
Look, grid slots are a whole load of fun. But we have to put a question mark on whether they really are the best types of online slots because there are so few of them to compare them.
And considering grid slots have been around for longer than Megaways, it’s surprising to say that we actually have more Megaways slot reviews in our books than Grid.
So, with a head start and more varied reviews, Megaways is ahead, with 48% of their total reviews falling under the 4 and 5-star categories.
The best slot is the most fun slot
At the end of the day, it’s all down to taste. And if you look at the battle, other than the oddity of the grid slot machine, they all seem to have an equal amount of 4 and 5-star reviews.
