Every good casino games creator needs one good underwater video slot. For Yggdrasil Gaming, that’s not the Reef Run mobile slot.
Look, we play on plenty of underwater themed mobile slot games. You can’t help it if you like slots, it seems to be a persistent theme every software provider likes to bring out of the theme bag and recycle every once in a while.
To this day we still play Microgaming’s Mermaids Millions, though their more recent Ariana slot has more state of the art graphics. Meanwhile Playtech has the brilliant Great Blue slot game, NetEnt Subtopia… the list goes on.
Our point is, if you are going to make a fish filled game, you’re going to have to either make it particularly beautiful and impressive, or have something unique that makes it better than the rest or, preferably, both.
Reef Run doesn’t have the first and doesn’t quite manage the second.
Online the graphics look so much better. The Reef Run slot machine is almost worth playing then, as the 3D graphics and animations make each win almost worthwhile.
But on Android and iPhone screens, or even on tablets, the fish look fuzzy, small and unimpressive.
The sounds, to be honest, are nothing to shout about either, and whilst each of the fish are unique enough to have character, it’s hard to see that when you’re spinning such small reels.
That said, it can’t be denied that this Yggdrasil slot hides some impressive wins in the free spins.
Namely because each time you make a win using one of those symbols, you get a multiplier on that symbol increase to 5x, then 10x, all the way to 20x.
The problem is that, mostly, you’ll trigger only 10 free spins, which isn’t quite enough to get enough wins on one big symbol to make the most of that 20 times multiplier.
But it feels difficult to reach, and doesn’t have the fast action of some of the likes of the brilliant Cyrus the Virus slot or the Cazino Zeppelin slot game.
We suspect that the only time we might be tempted to play the Reef Run slot online is when we spy it out of the corner of our eye, and remember that 20 times multiplier. Sometimes it’s fun to hold our breath, and hope, as you go diving into the dark.
Just don’t blame us if you end up drowning.

Scatters and Free Spins: Get three or more Free Spin symbols (the clam shells) appear anywhere on the screen to trigger this bonus feature.
On a plus note, you only need two clam shells during the free spins to trigger 2 more free spins. Though on 10 spins we've rarely seen it.
The big sell here is that each symbol has it's own set of multipliers. Everytime you win using a symbol, that multiplier increases.
So it starts at 1x. Win once with the symbol and then that symbol automatically has a 5x multiplier.
Win again, and the multiplier increases to 10x. Win a third time with that symbol and it climbs all the way to 20x.
On 10 spins, it's hard to get a large amount of multipliers across many symbols, but we re-triggered the free spins and played 20 in total and won just over 100 times our bet, which told us one important thing.
Those 60 free spins would bring in one large haul. You would never need to go fishing again.
The Reef Run mobile slot stands very firmly behind other Yggdrasil Gaming slots in terms of graphical quality.
And whilst that might not be enough to make us avoid it, it certainly makes it difficult to enjoy, especially as it's one bonus feature can feel tentatively out of reach.
To it's credit, we didn't even realise that it was missing a wild symbol until once we started writing this video slot review, thanks, in part, to the fact the wins are fairly frequent, if not out of this world till you get to the free spins.
