The early days of cinema get an IGT twist, with the Silent Movie mobile slot bringing monochromatic slow spins and 4 bonus games.
Alright, we have to admit. The black and white theme works better than we thought it would – it’s helped that International Games Technology (IGT) have added enough subtle shades of grey and animations that make each of the characters stand out.
But this is still a very black and white slot machine, even with the old-timey movie stars on screen which no one but a 90 year old would recognise.
As sensory deprived as you are for any colours, thank-god the scatter symbols are bright gold, as your eyes seek these little golden nuggets of hope.
And we mean that literally. The base game wins here are pretty unexciting.
Perhaps if they’d gone the way NextGen did with their old-timey black and white games (See King Kong or Psycho slot machines), and added a little colour, it wouldn’t be so obvious that the base game is just window dressing.
But it is. You are just waiting for the free spins, which in true IGT style, do not come often enough.
That said, when the free spins come, they can be wonderfully surprising in terms of what they can pay out.
The Keystone cops are always fun, as you get multipliers from 4x to 5x, which then double half way through the free spins.
The Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde spins, with the guaranteed wins (a bit like a poor man’s version of The Royal Masquerade slot) are our favourite, but so rare you’d think this monster fictional rather than fact.
A Trip to the Moon, with extra wilds, and the extra scatters of a Muddy Romance are hit or miss, making them almost disappointing when you do catch them.
Much like we’ve moved on from the silent age of cinema, so the Silent Movie video slot seems curiously old fashioned for an IGT game.
The problem is that the base game is unexciting, and the free spins are generally uninspiring. If they came often, like in the Family Guy slot, you’d forgive them because you know you’d get a second chance soon enough.
Instead, the Silent Movie free spins are so rare, you’d think they would have the kind of payouts that made the Wolf Run slot a classic… but they don’t.
This is a slow lumbering machine that is fun for a moment, but you’d soon crave a 21st century blockbuster.

Wild Symbol: The Silent Movie slot logo is the wild symbol and replaces all other symbols on screen except bonus.
4 Free Spin Bonus Features: To trigger the free spins, you need to get two scatter golden movie tickets on reels 1-3 and one of 4 special bonus symbols on reel 4.
This special symbol will decide which of the bonuses you are likely to get.
When you trigger the free spins, you'll have to pick from one of 3 ticket booths, which will decide how many free spins you get, or in the case of the Keystone cops bonus, the starting multiplier.
That last free spin bonus game in very rare in this Silent Movie slot game, but has the potential for the biggest rewards.
We weren't keen on the theme of this Silent Movie mobile slot, which no doubt left us with little patience to begin with.
If we'd had a little more, we might not have minded waiting ages for the 4 free spin bonuses which can make this video slot worthwhile, with decent wins... sometimes.
Still, for our money, we'd probably play on Sherlock Holmes slot game by IGT, with the far more modern Robert Downey Jr. bringing real thrills on every spin.
