The Starmania slot takes us to the dawn of gaming in this 70’s throwback game which pays both ways.
You can tell by the logo, before you even open up the Starmania mobile slot, that Tron woke up one day and walked into the NextGen office.
Not in itself a bad thing, retro slots are all the rage these days, with the likes of Neon Staxx and Reel Rush bringing you back to your childhood.
But the designs, from the stars, to the rainbow coloured wins, feel like this game was made in the 1970’s.
Which isn’t exactly what you want. This feels old, rather than retro.
Of course, as soon as you mention the above, you know the comparison is coming.
This feels very much like NextGen trying to recreate the Starburst mobile slot, but without the graphics.
On the other hand, you’ve got to give it to this slots provider – they are not good at copying.
Which in this case is a downfall, as the original was lively and dazzling, but the Starmania slot on mobile feels dulls and slow, even with the constant small wins in the base game.
The reason for this is that rather than enjoy the show, you are actually waiting for the free spins to show up.
Because what NextGen gaming have done is up the volatility for what should have been an easy playing video slot.
That means that there are some fairly good wins to be had in the free spins rounds when you manage to catch 3 scatters.
Mostly, you won’t. It takes time to get the free spins bonus, and when you do, even with the addition of the extra wilds, it doesn’t feel dramatic enough to warrant the wait.
We’d probably still rather play on the Psycho slot and catch the slow building thrills of the multipliers on the wild, than travel to this corner of the universe.

Stacked Wilds: On reel 2, 3 or 4 only, you get the occasional stacked wild to keep things interesting in the base game.
Pays Both Way: You get wins over 10 paylines that pay from left to right and right to left.
Scatters and Free Spins: Get three bonus symbols anywhere on screen and you'll trigger 10 free spins.
You then have a little counter on the left hand side that shows you the game adding more wilds to the screen, up to 30 extra wilds.
So what's exciting on one level, becomes a disappointment when you rarely get more wilds than you would in the base game.
Still, you can't deny that the potential for bigger wins is here as you could, potentially get three rows of stacked wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4, paying both ways.
Not their worst, but certainly not their best, NextGen can do so much better than this.
Naysayers may disagree with us, saying that giving bigger winning opportunity is only a good thing, which is why the Starmania mobile slot is a playable 2 stars.
But for us, the graphics and sounds felt old, and the base game or free spins not exciting enough to play on to wait for the other.
If you want NextGen do mid variance slots right, with all the razzle dazzle it deserves, we recommend An Evening with Holly Madison slot game.
